Peter Cheng recently led Chinese Business enterprises in a community outreach program, donating wheelchairs, food and winter clothing. Below is his speech:

“It is a great honour for me to be here with all of you today. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak.

Today is not only about giving donations. Today is about working together. Today is about caring for one another. Today is about building a stronger community.

South Africa is a beautiful country. Every community faces challenges. Some families do not have enough food. Some elderly people need care. Some people are living with disabilities. Some children need support to have a better future.

When one person suffers, the whole community is affected. When we help each other, the whole community becomes stronger. I believe that a strong community is built by ordinary people doing good things every day.

Government has an important responsibility to serve the people. Community organisations also play an important role. Businesses also have a responsibility.

As members of the Chinese business community, we believe that business is not only about making money. Business must also create jobs, support families and give back to society. This is called social responsibility.

We are proud to stand together with the local community. Today we are donating food parcels, blankets, clothing, school bags and wheelchairs. These gifts may seem small, but we hope they will bring comfort, hope and dignity to many families.

We especially want to support the elderly, children, people living with disabilities and families who are facing difficult times.

We thank all the volunteers who worked hard to organise today’s event. We thank the church for opening its doors. We thank the community leaders for helping us identify families who truly need assistance. We thank our government representatives for serving our communities. We thank every sponsor and every volunteer who made today possible.

Our message today is simple. We are stronger when we stand together. Kindness has no nationality. Compassion has no language. Helping others has no borders.

Let us continue to build friendship between the Chinese business community and the people of Germiston. Let us respect one another. Let us work together. Let us support one another.

Together we can build safer communities. Together we can create more opportunities. Together we can give hope to the next generation.

Finally, I would like to encourage everyone: If you are able to help someone, please do it. Even a small act of kindness can change someone’s life.

Let us continue serving our communities with humility, respect and love.

Thank you very much. May God bless you all. May God bless Germiston. May God bless South Africa.

Thank you.”
