On May 15, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sent an official letter to Pope Leo XIV thanking him for his earlier statements denouncing military spending and war—the same statements which led to strident criticism by U.S. President Donald Trump—according to the Venezuela-based Telesur news agency.
Pezeshkian urged the entire international community to oppose Washington’s “illegal” and “dangerous” war against Iran.
Telesur adds: “In the letter, the Iranian leader reaffirmed that his country acted strictly within its legitimate right to self-defense. He also reiterated Tehran’s unwavering commitment to diplomatic channels and peaceful solutions.”
