Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned the new economic sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran, describing the action as an instance of “economic terrorism” and “crimes against humanity.”

In covering the Foreign Ministry statement, IRNA noted that Aug. 19, the day Trump issued his declaration of economic warfare on Iran, was also the anniversary of the notorious 1953 CIA-MI6 coup against Mohammad Mosaddegh.

The statement argued that “there is no doubt that US economic sanctions against Iran, which target the fundamental human rights of every Iranian citizen, constitute ‘economic terrorism’ and ‘crimes against humanity,’ and those who order and implement these sanctions deserve to be tried and punished for committing such heinous crimes.”

It continued: “Economic sanctions and pressure are the other side of the coin of war and military aggression, and the US’s pathological addiction to these two approaches has not only placed global peace and security under an objective threat, but has also subjected human civilization to an unprecedented moral decline. Accordingly, any government that believes in the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, including the principle of respect for the national sovereignty of countries, cannot remain indifferent to the continuation of the United States’ blatant lawlessness and belligerence toward fundamental international norms.”

The statement added: “The US action in making a grand announcement of new sanctions, while constituting an explicit admission of the commission of crimes against humanity, is a continuation of a policy that has already been tested and failed. Repeating this failed policy will certainly produce nothing but a repetition of past failures and the disgrace of its designers and implementers. The US government and the architects and executors of this policy will, of course, bear responsibility for its consequences and repercussions.”
