UNISA TO HOST THE 11TH ANNUAL DECOLONIALITY SUMMER SCHOOL

The University of South Africa’s (Unisa’s) College of Human Sciences (CHS) proudly announces the 11th anniversary edition of its esteemed Decoloniality Summer School, slated to unfold from 13 to 17 January 2025, at the Unisa Main Campus in Pretoria. The 2025 Summer School which will be held under the overarching theme “Fanon Beyond Fanon: Living Decoloniality- Language, Identity and Aesthetics” is a milestone edition that promises to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing discourse on decolonization.

Since its inception in 2013, the Unisa Decoloniality Summer School has played a crucial role in challenging the enduring impacts of colonialism and apartheid, fostering critical dialogues on the decolonization of power, knowledge and existence both within Africa and globally. As we mark eleven years of intellectual exploration and transformative conversations, the 11th anniversary edition will bring together eminent thought leaders to reflect on the past, disrupt the present and envision decolonial futures.

This year’s theme will be explored through various lenses, addressing topics such as the foundation for an Afrocentric University; a transformative renaissance of the African Academy; Frantz Fanon philosophical attributes and new forms of Fanonism; Amilcar Cabral and Frantz Fanon on decolonization and Africanisation; decolonial aesthesis; epistemic trauma; decolonisation, enslavement at the Cape, the face in bondage and in freedom, etc.

The Summer School will feature presentations by a stellar line-up of scholars and practitioners, including Lewis R. Gordon, a distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Global Affairs at the University of Connecticut; Reiland Rabaka, a Professor of African, African-American and Caribbean Studies and Founder and Director of the Centre for African and American Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, Rozena Maart, a Professor of Philosophy from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Professor Makhosazana Xaba from the University of Johannesburg, renowned for translating Frantz Fanon’s book ‘The Wretched of the Earth’ into Isizulu.
