DEMOCRATIC VICTORY IN VENEZUELA MARKS A NEW PHASE IN DEEPENING SOVEREIGHNTY

Once again, Venezuela has demonstrated the peaceful and democratic nature of its people in the face of violent fascist extremism. In a historic event, Venezuelans reaffirmed their irrevocable commitment to deepening the model of direct democracy that is being built within communities—far removed from the bourgeois vision of politics. On this path, the Bolivarian Revolution secured a highly significant victory in the regional and parliamentary elections held on 25 May 2025.

“After enduring blockades, criminal sanctions, fascism, and violence, the Bolivarian Revolution has proven itself more relevant and stronger than ever. Today, we have demonstrated the power of Chavismo, of 21st-century Bolivarianism,” declared President Nicolás Maduro. He emphasised that this victory belongs to “a single owner: the men and women of Venezuela’s fields, the noble, courageous, and victorious people.”

Triumph of Hope and Sovereignty

  • On 25 May, the Venezuelan people once again showcased their democratic spirit by peacefully and enthusiastically participating in the elections of 24 governors, 260 regional legislators, and 285 deputies to the National Assembly. Hope prevailed once again, renewed by a commitment to prosperity and stability, driving forward the significant transformations we have pledged to achieve in pursuit of collective well-being.
  • According to the first bulletin issued by the National Electoral Council, the Great Patriotic Pole secured victory in 23 of the 24 governorships, including Guayana Esequiba. Regarding the national list vote—one of the mechanisms for electing National Assembly deputiesthe coalition secured at least 40 seats. These results reaffirm Chavismo as Venezuela’s leading political force, securing 82.88% of the votes, while opposition sectors garnered just over 12%.
  • Sunday’s election, marks the sixth electoral process for selecting National Assembly deputies and the seventh election of governors and state legislators. This confirms Venezuela as “the country with the most free, democratic, and sovereign elections in the past 100 years of human history, stated President Nicolás Maduro, who condemned the double standards of those who question Venezuelan democracy.

A New Era for Sovereignty

The National Assembly, set to begin its functions on 5 January 2026, will receive the constitutional reform proposal put forward by President Nicolás Maduro. This will initiate a broader and more inclusive consultation process to refine the project.

In this regard, President Maduro proposed the modernisation of the electoral system, which will be based on communal circuits—an organisational structure of popular power aimed at fostering transformation and territorial development through active community participation.

“It is there, in that territory, where a permanent consultation system will be established. It was Chávez’s idea when we first met him in 1992,” said Maduro, adding that Venezuela “needs to modernise, expand, and bring to life the new political system to build its electoral system.”

Sunday’s electoral process also marks the birth of a new era of sovereignty— one guided by peace—with the election of authorities in the state of Guayana Esequiba, in accordance with the mandate of the referendum held on 3 December 2023.

Guyana has been an illegal occupier, inherited from the British Empire, which unlawfully took control of that territory. “They have destroyed it (…) Illegal mining has shattered its beauty, its biodiversity, and its rivers. Now, with a governor in place, with resources, a budget, and all the support I will provide, we are going to restore Guayana Esequiba,” said Maduro.

He rejected foreign interference in the territorial dispute and reiterated his call to Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali, to resolve the controversy through dialogue. “Sooner rather than later, you will have to sit down with me and accept Venezuela’s sovereignty,” Maduro told his counterpart.

The election of authorities in the region proceeded smoothly and peacefully, in line with the will expressed by the Venezuelan people in the 3 December 2023 referendum. We are fulfilling that mandate in peace. We cannot view an autonomous and sovereign process—such as an electoral process—as a threat,” warned Minister of People’s Power for Defence, Vladimir Padrino.

We are not pointing rifles at Guyana or attacking it. We are calling for popular participation in voting,Padrino stated.

Neil Villamizar, the first elected governor of Venezuela’s state of Guayana Esequiba, affirmed that his victory is part of “this era we are living in—a time of reclaiming our Guayana Esequiba.”

The Electoral Path

A total of 54 political organisations participated in the elections, 66% of which belonged to opposition factions that distanced themselves from far-right abstentionist calls.

Spokespersons from opposition groups that took part acknowledged that the correct path for political engagement is electoral participation, respect for the Constitution, and the protection of institutional integrity—rejecting abstention as “a void.”

Jorge Rodríguez, head of the VEN25+ campaign, stated that calls to boycott the election “had the opposite effect, as many voters turned out simply because they believe in the Constitution and democracy and wanted to signal their frustration with extremism, fascism, and violence.”

“Today, all of Venezuela, fortunately and thanks to God, without bloodshed and without conflict, has defeated fascism through the strength of the vote,” Rodríguez declared.
