THE MDA CELEBRATES WORLD BEE DAY 2025

The Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA) proudly joins the global community in celebrating World Bee Day on 20 May 2025, under the theme “Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all.”

Bees and other pollinators play a vital role in food production, biodiversity conservation, and environmental health.

At MDA, we recognize the critical connection between sustainable agriculture and community development, particularly in mining-affected regions.

As part of celebrating Bee Day the MDA hosted an event at Marikana Agricultural Hub to highlight the critical role of bees and other pollinators in sustainable development, food security, and biodiversity.

The event to celebrate the World Bee Day was attended by the MEC of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development in North West Hon. Madoda Sambatha and the CEO of Mineworkers Development Agency Mr Tshimane Montoedi, beneficiaries of MDA and other stakeholders.

This important gathering brought together farmers, researchers, industry stakeholders, and policy leaders who engaged in meaningful dialogue and a way forward for a thriving beekeeping industry in the North West province.

Youth, women, and people with disabilities were among the participants, reflecting ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and expand access to opportunities within the agricultural sector.

In recent years, MDA has championed community-based beekeeping initiatives as part of its broader efforts to promote alternative livelihoods.

These initiatives empower former mineworkers, women, and youth by equipping them with skills to produce and market honey and other bee-derived products, contributing to household income, food security, and environmental sustainability.

“Through our dedicated ex-mineworkers programme, we are empowering individuals and communities by harnessing the potential of beekeeping as both a sustainable agricultural practice and a meaningful source of income. In areas such as De Wildt, Ramakokastad, Zeerust, Vryburg, Matlosana, Rustenburg, and Manyaledi, we have supported more than 100 active beekeepers, equipping them with the skills, tools, and resources needed to thrive,” said Chief Executive officer Mr Montoedi.

Mr Montoedi also added. “The MDA is actively seeking to deepen collaboration with both the Department of Agriculture and our partners in the private sector. It is only through strong, cross-sector partnerships that we can truly expand impact, scale innovation, and sustain the momentum of transformation in our rural economies.”

This World Bee Day, the MDA reaffirms its commitment to promoting green economic opportunities, supporting small-scale farmers, and contributing to national efforts on biodiversity and climate resilience.

We call on all stakeholders government, civil society, private sector, and mediato support pollinator-friendly initiatives and help create a future where both people and planet thrive.
