The African Congress for Transformation (ACT) joins the people of Botswana, the African continent, and the international community in mourning the passing of former President Festus Mogae, who has died at the age of 86.

President Mogae will be remembered as a principled leader, an advocate of clean governance, and a committed servant of the people of Botswana. During his tenure as the third President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008, he demonstrated that African leadership can be rooted in integrity, accountability, discipline, and visionary governance.

Under his stewardship, Botswana consolidated its reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, while strengthening its economic institutions and advancing sound management of national resources for the benefit of its citizens.

His leadership during the HIV/AIDS crisis also stands as one of the defining moments of compassionate and courageous governance on the continent. At a time when many nations were overwhelmed by the epidemic, President Mogae championed bold interventions that saved countless lives and restored hope to millions.

ACT further acknowledges his contribution to peace-building, regional cooperation, and democratic consolidation across Africa even after leaving office. His commitment to African unity and development reflected the values of servant leadership that our continent desperately needs.

As ACT, we believe that the passing of President Mogae is not only a loss to Botswana, but to the entire African continent. His legacy should inspire a new generation of African leaders to place the interests of the people above personal enrichment, corruption, and political opportunism.

We extend our sincere condolences to President Duma Boko, the government and people of Botswana, the Mogae family, friends, and all those who were touched by his exemplary leadership.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
