KIRSTY COVENTRY MAKES MULTIPLE HISTORY AS SHE BECOMES IOC PRESIDENT

The campaign and endorsement by Global South Media Network (GSMN) of Kirsty Coventry to become the new IOC boss has come to fruition. Zimbabwean Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry has made history after she was elected president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

After defeating six male competitors for the position, Coventry becomes the first ever woman to lead the global sporting body. She is also the first African to assume the highest office of the influential organization whose mandate is to administer global Olympics. Coventry has also been a serving member of the IOC executive committee.

Coventry becomes the 10th President of the IOC. At only 41, she is also the youngest ever to assume the powerful role. She will officially take over the reigns on June 24, succeeding Thomas Bach, who will step down after 12 years in the driving seat.

An accomplished athlete, Coventry is a standout sporting achiever for her native Zimbabwe. She has won seven of the country’s only eight Olympic medals to date.

She takes over at a tricky time where geopolitics have wreaked havoc inside the realms of the Olympic movement. The ban of the Russian and Belarusian athletes following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine remains a contested issue. It is been aggravated by the IOC’s failure to mete out a similar punishment to the Israeli athletes in the wake of the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

As the Global South nations show increased optimism for fairness in sport administration by the IOC, the developing nations and the Global North will be looking very closely at how clean the new broom will sweep at the helm of the IOC. Thus far, Coventry’s latest medal is as history maker, having shattered the proverbial glass ceiling. Strength and well-wishes for her are in order, and GSMN promises support for her Presidency.
