Yesterday May the 7th 2025, our now crossed over Cde Dr Gomolemo Mokae was remembered in a heart warming ceremony at the State Theatre in Pretoria.
Those who loved and lived with him came from far and near to honor this Gentle Giant who was an Octopus of a soul. Dr Mokae fitted everywhere as an individual and everyone had a different experience of him ranging from medical, political, social, religion, literary, the arts and community activism.
Those who attended got the first-hand encounter of remembering his spirit whilst those who couldn’t attend personally sent messages of togetherness and apologies but what mattered was them being with all of us in spirit.
The State Theatre offered us the venue with no strings attached because Gomolemo Mokae was one of their own and they couldn’t disown him in his death. Our wonderful Brother Jerry Tsie did an amazing job together with Brother Franc Fanon and other artists who worked with Gomolemo.

Brother Robert Mcbride gave a moving tribute about not only a Friend but a Confidante whom he could lean on at any given time to his last day alive and later came to write a memoir of him.

His Nephew Sabata Mokae, a distinguished author of Seicwana Novels and Radio Drama gave a beautiful speech about his Uncle and Mentor Gomolemo Mokae was to him.
His Cousin Sister Mme Bridget Motsepe narrated a detailed history of how they grew up, raised by their parents Rre Moruti Mokae and Rre Motsepe Senior who was a school headmaster and a shrewd businessman.
Our very own Cde Mokgadi Pela who was very close to Gomolemo delivered the eulogy, while Our BC Struggle Veteran Ntate Cde Tiyani Lybon Mabasa gave a brief speech of Gomolemo’s contributions in the Biko Movement.

Reverend Kgomotso “KG” Modiselle didn’t spare any punches as he gave a detailed synopsis of the Life of Gomolemo Mokae, as Gomolemo’s Protegè.
Our Keynote Speaker, our very own Scud missile Veli Zulumathambo ka Sompisi delivered a highly educational and informative paper which is available for download regarding “The role of Arts in the Society and function of Artists.”

The family was represented by Rre Johnny Mokae who’s also a very receptive and beautiful soul.
We will always remember our spirit by celebration the likes of this Gentle Giant and all those who crossed over having fought to defend Blackness as a symbol of pride and power.
We will never in The Black Consciousness Movement disown our own, even in death.
“Dr Gomolemo Mokae is Us and We are Dr Gomolemo Mokae.“
