2026 ELECTION SEASON KICKS OFF WITH IEC’S LAUNCH OF NEW LOGO

IEC’S LAUNCH OF NEW LOGO

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has fired the starting gun on the 2026 local government elections, unveiling a new official logo as it kicks off its national campaign.

Revealed on 1 April 2026 at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, the branding marks the IEC’s first major move ahead of a tightly scheduled election calendar. Voter registration is locked in for 20–21 June 2026, with South Africans expected to head to the polls between October and November.

The backdrop is stark. In 2021, turnout collapsed to 45.9% — the lowest in the democratic era — despite a voter roll exceeding 26 million people. The gap between registration and actual voting has become one of the defining challenges of South Africa’s electoral system.

The IEC’s new logo and accompanying campaign — including the message “Get up, show up and vote” — are designed to push participation back up, particularly among younger voters, where disengagement has been most visible.

Election season is officially live, but the rollout is only half the battle. The numbers from 2021 were already a warning: millions registered, millions absent. After decades of fluctuating engagement, the real measure of success will not be in visuals or slogans — it will be in seeing if citizens will reclaim the local ballot or let disengagement set the tone, once again.
