The leadership of the Black Consciousness Movement used the 48th anniversary of the death of its founder, Steve Biko in Pretoria on Friday to call for the unity of the organizations.

The call was made by AZAPO’s chairman, Mr Amukelani Ngobeni and Black Consciousness Movement United (BCMU) president, Dr Hlulani Mabasa.

They were speaking at the Kgoshi Mampuru Prison in the cell in which Biko died after being transported on the back of the police vehicle manacled and critical with no medical attention.

Ngobeni said: “We have to unify this movement as the best tribute to our leader. Me and you Dr Mabasa have to sit down after this commemorative event to pursue unity. I don’t have any personal differences with you nor do you.”

Dr Mabasa said: “When Biko was arrested and finally murdered, he was in pursuit of unifying the liberation movements – both internally and those in exile.”

He decried the state of affairs in the country adding “that we don’t need a National Dialogue but a rebellion against the misrule.”

The event, which was characterized by revolutionary songs and African rituals, brought together BC stalwarts, Advocate Mojanku Gumbi, Professor Itumeleng Mosala, Dr Mamabolo Raphesu and Mr Lybon Mabasa.
